Short-time work

Short-time work means that employees work fewer hours during economic difficulties but still receive part of their salary. For example, if a company has fewer orders due to a crisis, it can reduce employees’ working hours, with the labor agency supporting their wages.

For residents of Germany or Austria, it is important to know that short-time work must be applied for, and there are deadlines to observe. The regulations are found in SGB III (§ 95 ff.). A common mistake is that employees are unaware that they still have a right to their vacation days during short-time work.
