The right of first refusal (rental) gives tenants the chance to purchase their rented property before the landlord sells it to another buyer. For instance, if a landlord decides to sell the property, the tenant has the option to buy it under the same terms offered to potential buyers.

For residents in Germany and Austria, it’s crucial to know about this right, as tenants usually have a limited time to express their interest. According to § 577 of the BGB, the landlord must inform the tenant in writing about the sale, and the tenant then has two months to exercise their right.
