Subletting

Subletting occurs when a tenant rents out part or all of their apartment to another person. For example, someone living in a shared apartment might rent a room to a friend.

For residents in Germany or Austria, it’s crucial to obtain the landlord’s permission before subletting. According to § 540 BGB, landlords have the right to approve or deny subletting. A common mistake is subletting without permission, which can lead to termination of the lease.
