Care Leave

Care Leave is a period during which employees can reduce their working hours or take a complete break to care for relatives. For instance, an employee whose parents need care can apply for up to six months of unpaid leave.

For residents of Germany or Austria, it is essential to know that Care Leave is regulated under § 2 of the Care Leave Act (PflegeZG). Employees have the right to apply for Care Leave but must do so at least 10 days in advance. A common mistake is not informing the employer in time or failing to apply correctly.
