Rent Reduction

Rent reduction is a tenant’s right to lower their rent when there are defects in the apartment that affect its use. For example, if the heating doesn’t work in winter, the tenant can reduce the rent until the issue is fixed.

This is important for residents in Germany as it ensures they do not pay full price for a defective apartment. The tenant must notify the landlord in a timely manner. This is regulated under § 536 BGB, which addresses rent reduction due to defects.
