SCHUFA
SCHUFA, or the General Credit Protection Agency, is an institution that collects and stores information about individuals’ creditworthiness. When you apply for a loan or sign a contract, banks check your SCHUFA data to determine if you are creditworthy. For instance, a poor SCHUFA report can result in a loan being denied.
For residents in Germany, SCHUFA is crucial as many contracts, such as rental agreements or mobile phone contracts, require a positive SCHUFA check. A negative entry can limit your options. It is important to regularly check your SCHUFA data to avoid errors. You have the right to request a free self-disclosure once a year (§ 34 BDSG).
