AU Certificate

The AU Certificate, also known as a sick note, is a document issued by a doctor to confirm that a person is unable to work due to illness or injury. For instance, if someone has the flu and cannot work for two weeks, the doctor will issue an AU Certificate.

For residents in Germany or Austria, the AU Certificate is crucial for claiming continued pay during illness. It is advisable to submit the certificate to the employer as soon as possible, typically within three days of the illness starting. The legal basis for this is found in § 5 of the Continued Payment of Wages Act (EFZG) in Germany and § 8 of the General Social Insurance Act (ASVG) in Austria.
