Direct Debit (SEPA)

A direct debit is a payment process where a company withdraws money from your bank account after you have given them permission. For example, if you subscribe to a streaming service, the provider can automatically deduct the amount from your account every month.

For residents in Germany or Austria, it is important to know that you have the right to reverse unauthorized direct debits within eight weeks. This is regulated under § 675u of the BGB. Common mistakes include forgetting to keep your account sufficiently funded, which can lead to overdraft fees.
