Return Debit

A return debit occurs when a bank does not process a direct debit payment due to insufficient funds or a dispute by the account holder. For example, if you attempt to pay a bill via direct debit and your account lacks sufficient funds, the debit will be returned.

For residents in Germany or Austria, it’s crucial to be aware of deadlines regarding return debits. You have the right to dispute a debit within eight weeks of the transaction (§ 675u BGB). Common mistakes include failing to respond promptly or not informing the bank.
